Abstract

    Background
Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for nosocomial infections. It produces multiple virulence factors including enterotoxins and adhesins, which are associated with a variety of symptoms caused by S. aureus infections. Until now, the difference of pathogenicity and virulence between methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) strains may be exist but remain an unsolved question. In this study, we investigated and analyzed 14 virulence factors of MRSA and MSSA strains.
    Methods
All strains (MRSA 108, MSSA 86 strains) were characterized by agr, SCCmec (for MRSA), and MLST. The enterotoxin type, hemolysin type and the presence of tsst, eta gene was also determined. The 14 virulence factor (bbp, fib, ebp, fnbB, clfB, clfA, fnbA, cna, sdrC, sdrD, sdrE, icaA, map/eap, V8), which is related with cell adherence, was selected and each strain was genetically characterized by multiplex PCR.
    Results
Among the 108 MRSA strains, 69 (63.5%) strains showed ST5 (20.4%), ST239 (21.1%), and ST72 (22%) MLST. These strains also had SCCmec II-agrII-ST5 (19.4%), SCCmec III-agrI-ST239 (18.3%), SCCmec IV-agrI-ST72 type (17.4%). Of the virulence gene, bbp gene was just detected in MSSA strains. The presence of fnbB gene was 58% in MRSA and 42% in MSSA strains, but all of ST8 strain (29 strains) had fnbB gene. The ebp gene was not detected in ST239 and ST254 strains. And the presence rate of cna gene was 42% in ST97 and 48% in ST72 strains. The sdrE gene was 100% in ST8 MRSA strains, but 70% in ST8 MSSA strains.
    Conclusion
The presence of bbp, fnbB, and sdrE gene was different between MSSA and MRSA strains. And some virulence gene has specificity to the sequence type.
