Abstract

Overweight or obesity in childhood and adolescence increases the risk of their developing in adulthood. Fatty acid composition is used as an indicator of disease risk, because its alteration has been related to metabolic disease. We investigated the longitudinal relation between plasma fatty acid compositions to body fatness in Korean children. This study included 137 children aged 10.3 ± 0.5 years and their fatty acid composition of plasma phospholipids was analyzed by gas chromatography. Obese boys showed significantly higher percentage of dihomo-gamma linolenic acid (DGLA, 20:3n-6) and palmitoleic acid than non-obese children both at baseline and 2 years later. Increased of BMI% was positively associated with plasma concentration of DGLA. Also, the group with highest tertile of D6D activity had significantly higher adiposity index (body weight, BMI%, body fat (%), waist circumstance) than the group with the lowest tertile of D6D activity. The findings of present study suggest that the level of DGLA and estimated D6D activity in plasma phospholipids are respectively associated with body fatness in Korean children.
