Outbreaks in residential facilities tended more often to begin through a worker. Environmental samples from shared items (such as wheelchairs) tested positive, indicating inadequate management of shared items.

Outbreaks in non-residential facilities used by the elderly tended to more often begin through infections acquired from family or church meetings. Activities that facilitate droplet-induced transmission, such as singing, seem to take place without mask wearing.

To prevent entry of COVID-19 into residential and non-residential facilities used by the elderly population, workers, users, and facility managers need to comply with precautionary measures.

- Precautionary measures for workers:

If you have COVID-19 suspected symptoms, do not go to work and get tested.

Do not visit public venues such as nightclubs, bars, singing rooms, and PC cafes. Refrain from attending social gatherings such as club meetings and religious small group meetings.

When you are working, wear personal protective equipment such as facemasks. Strictly follow hand washing and hygiene management.

- Precautionary measures for residents/users:

Newly admitted residents need to be tested.

Residents or users that have suspected symptoms such as respiratory symptoms or fever need to be tested immediately.

* The National Health Insurance will cover 50% of the testing cost for new residents of care homes and 100% of the testing cost of those presenting with symptoms

- Precautionary measures for facility managers:

Thoroughly disinfect the surfaces of frequently touched objects including shared items (such as wheelchairs), handles, and door knobs.

Avoid all activities that make it easy for respiratory droplets to travel in air as much as possible.

Divide meal times into multiple shifts. Meals should be had without conversation and sitting face to face should be avoided during meal time.

Ventilate the space regularly.

KCDC advised caution in light of the recent rise in COVID-19 infections especially around religious small group meetings and door-to-door sales.

Religious facilities tend to involve talking, singing, and eating together and thus involve a high risk of droplet-induced transmission.

- KCDC recommends canceling or postponing small group meetings or switching to non-face-to-face alternatives.

- If on-site service is unavoidable, such facilities should reduce the number of participants need to be reduced to ensure proper distancing, check for fever and suspected symptoms, ensure hand washing and mask wearing, and make sure not to provide meals or engage in activities that release respiratory droplets in the air (such as singing, chanting, and shouting).

Sales events attracting elderly people with baits such as free concerts in order to market illegal health foods or medical devices to them tend to involve a large number of visitors singing and eating together in a confined space with poor ventilation, making it easy for transmission to occur. The elderly are advised to avoid such events.

COVID-19 outbreaks can occur in any confined, crowded, and close-contact environment. Therefore, gatherings such as social club meetings and religious small group meetings should be postponed and nightlife establishments, bars, karaoke, and PC cafes should be avoided. In daily life, hand washing, mask wearing, and 2 meter distancing should be practiced.
