The personalized medicine is underway to practice the tailored strategies for the risk prediction, prediagnostic tracing, effective prevention and treatment of diseases, which is a new promise of post-genome era. The tailored therapy is based on the knowledge of a person's genetic makeup which is different among races, tribes and individuals.
The BioBank for Health Sciences preserves biological resources including cells, sera, plasma, urine, tissues, DNA, lymphocytes, peripheral blood as well as BAC clones of human and microorganisms that have been collected by various national projects such as the Korean Health and Genome Study (KoHGES), the National Survey of Health and Nutrition, and Genome Research Centers for 12 disease groups.
These national projects are aimed at collecting and exploiting the Korean specific biological materials which are distributable to the Korean scientific and medical societies, as well as coping with global competition in the personalized medicine era.
Additionally, BioBank performs not only quality control (Q/C) processes of these invaluable biological materials but also several research projects to develop disease-specific biomarkers and technical advances of quality control. BioBank is also running the serum bank to contribute for epidemiological studies of infectious diseases, and prevention, detection, and treatment of diseases.
