The Division of Brain Diseases carries out studies on molecular and cellular mechanism of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke and depression in an effort to understand the causes and pathogenesis of the diseases. The division also concentrates on searching and developing the biological markers specific for these brain diseases in order to use early diagnosis.
The generated data are utilized for the development of diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive tools for those diseases. Recently, we set a normal population based cohort in order to perform epidemiological and genetic studies for dementia and depression. In 1998, we started to direct and support brain research by establishing Biomedical Brain Research Center (BBRC). BBRC plays a pivotal role in providing research funds to the neuroscientists at universities and promoting international collaborative activities, especially with Japan, China and India.
