The Division of Antimicrobial Resistance performs several studies on antimicrobial resistance. First, defining the resistance mechanism of antimicrobial resistant pathogens and molecular epidemiologic investigation of nosocomial pathogens. Second, establishment and operation of laboratory-based surveillance studies for antimicrobial resistance
trends in hospitals and community and monitoring new emerging antimicrobial resistant pathogens including VRSA. Third, development of standards and methodologies for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria and fungi. Fourth, improvement of diagnostic methods of the mycoses. Fifth, development of new diagnostic methods and vaccine for the prevention of antimicrobial resistant pathogens and fungal disease.

1. Research on antimicrobial resistant pathogens
- Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA
- Vancomycin/streptogramin resistant Enterococci
- Antifungal resistant Candida
- ESBL producing Klebsiella pneumoniae.
- Carbapenem/fluoroquinolone resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp.
2. National surveillance and control of antimicrobial resistance & nosocomial infections
- Collection and analysis of antimicrobial resistant pathogens from non-tertiary hospitals.
- Database management of antimicrobial resistant pathogens isolated from Korean non-tertiary hospitals.
- VRSA laboratory national surveillance
- Management the Korean Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (KARMS) website.
- Monitoring the incidence of nosocomial infections and their associated risk factors and pathogens via National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance (NNIS) system
3. Fungi diagnosis and research
- Identification of candida, aspergillus, cryptococcus species
- Serological diagnosis of candidiasis, aspergillosis and cryptococcosis
