| The first National Quarantine
Stations were established at ports of
Busan, Incheon and Mok-po in 1926 under
the US Department of Health, Education,
and Welfare during the period of the
United States Army Military Govemment
in Korea. As of today, there are 13
Quarantine Stations and 11 Substations
throughout the country. |

| In order to prevent the introduction,
transmission, land spread of infectious
diseases from foreign countries into
Korea and vice versa, NQSs are responsible
for (1) conduction inspections of both
inbound and outbound conveyances (ship,
aircraft, road vehicle), crews, passengers
and cargos, (2) providing globally approved
immunizations (3) keeping control of
public health and hygiene within the
inspection zone and (4) searching vectors
of imported diseases. |

| The Quarantine Stations have recently
been equipped with thermal image infrared
cameras to promptly respond to emerging
and re-emerging infectious diseases
and bio-terrorism. National Quarantine
Stations Provide updated information
on disease outbreak situation in other
countries through a web-site and also
conduct public awareness campaigns to
prevent infectious diseases for outbound
traverlers. |
